Sam Allardyce admitted that former wonderboy Michael Owen will probably need a groin operation, which could keep him out between three and six weeks. For Geordie fans, it must be like a really fit bird that keeps showing you one boob before buggering off for holidays with another man. Or, it may be nothing like that at all.
Allardyce’s lips quivered as he said: “I am worried he asked to come off. If Michael needs an operation, he will have it straight away,”
And it won’t just be Newcastle who miss him, he’ll also be unavailable for the vital Euro 2008 qualifiers this month. Well at least Steve McClaren won’t have a selection headache anymore…
Allardyce continued through the tears: “Even though the first scan was clear, there is a persistent area that is causing him a problem.We will scan it again, get a specialist opinion and see where we go from there.”
And all this after finally completing his rehabilitation from his last injury…Michael Owen and Newcastle United, surely a relationship consummated on the treatment table!
