Liverpool are ready to announce what could be one of the transfer coups of the summer after they beat a number of top European sides to the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitayran according to The Mirror.

The Armenia captain is regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders in the game after a number of highly impressive performances for the Ukrainian side.

He has been an integral part of the Shakhtar sides that have enjoyed successful runs in the Champions League in recent years.

But it now appears that Mkhitaryan is on the verge of a move to Merseyside after he flew in for a medical.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers expects to complete the deal by the end of the week.

The signing is a statement of intent from Liverpool who had to fend off competition from the likes of Juventus and PSG.

Rodgers has parted with a significant chunk of his summer transfer spending in order to conclude a deal with Shakhtar thought to be receiving a fee of around £23 million.

Liverpool will hope to make some of that by confirming the permanent sale of Andy Carroll to West Ham for a fee in the region of £15 million.
