The CaughtOffside 50: The Best Footballers In the World Today

33. Javi Martinez

Not a bad season for a player who started the campaign under extreme pressure to perform following his high profile €40 million move from Athletic Bilbao over the summer – a Bundesliga record.

Slotting in next to the experienced Bastian Schweinsteiger, he helped pull the strings in the club’s midfield to help them achieve an historic treble, and his expert reading of the game ensured his defence were well protected, conceding just 18 league goals as they romped to the title ahead of rivals Borussia Dortmund.

His influence was certainly visible in Europe too, as he outplayed both Xavi and Andres Iniesta during the Champions League semi final clash against Barcelona.

He has already proved that he is worth every cent of his hefty transfer fee this season, cementing his place in the CaughtOffside 50, and with long time admirer Pep Guardiola taking over the reins in Bavaria we can expect him to feature here heavily in the future.
