The future of the experienced Spain international has been up in the air for some time now, with Alonso’s deal at the Santiago Bernabeu expiring next June, leading to a mountain of speculation that the holding midfielder could be quitting the La Liga giants and returning to the Premier League at the end of this season.

And Alonso’s former club Liverpool, as well as the west Londoners, who are now managed by the ex-Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho, have both recently been heavily linked with making a move for the 32-year-old next summer.

However, those two Premier League outfits will now have to look elsewhere for a new defensive midfielder after the player opted to instead extend his stay in the Spanish capital, with Alonso having been at Madrid now since August 2009, when he left the Merseysiders to join Real in a deal worth £30 million.

And in the intervening period, the Spaniard has managed to score six goals in his 202 matches in all competitions for the club.
