The Red Devils have been rocked by the news that their current skipper Nemanja Vidic is leaving Old Trafford at the end of the campaign in order to join Serie A giants Inter Milan on a lucrative Bosman-style free transfer, a decision that was confirmed by the Italian outfit on Wednesday.
And now as a result of that, new United head coach David Moyes is said to be seriously considering bringing forward his decision to elevate the England international to the captaincy at the Theatre of Dreams, especially if Vidic is now no longer going to be involved in the first team going forward.
“The manager will make Wayne captain and it could be sooner than people think,” said a United source.
“His current captain is leaving and promoting Wayne, the team’s talisman, is the logical thing to do because he is the future.”
Rooney has just agreed to extend his stay in the north west until 2019.
