Spurs Eye Summer Swoop For Ajax Centre Back

Dutch defender has only just put pen to paper on a new deal at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Netherlands national team coach Louis van Gaal will make highly rated Ajax centre-back Joel Veltman his first signing as Tottenham Hotspur head coach if he is appointed to take over from current boss Tim Sherwood at White Hart Lane this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The experienced Dutchman is the favourite to take over from Sherwood at the north London club next season, despite the fact that the latter was only appointed in his role last December.

However, with Tottenham now looking increasingly unlikely to finish the campaign in the top four of the Premier League, and with it gain qualification for the Uefa Champions League, it is expected that chairman Daniel Levy will part company with Sherwood at the end of the season.

And with Van Gaal likely to be the new man in charge in north London going forward, it is understood that the former Ajax boss will return to his old club this summer in order to try and sign the Eredivisie champions’ central defender Veltman.

The Netherlands international is set to go to this summer’s World Cup finals with Van Gaal and has a contract in the Dutch capital that runs until 2018.
