Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is considering tabling a bid for Man United winger Luis Antonio Valencia as he looks to strengthen his Anfield squad this summer.

The experienced 28 year old has just completed his fifth season at Man United, arguably his weakest to date, and with just a year to run on his current contract there is every chance that incoming boss Louis van Gaal may not see the tireless runner as part of his plans.

Valencia started just over half of Man United’s Premier League fixtures and it’s his ability to play at either right-back or further up on the right-wing that attracts Rodgers.

Similarly Liverpool’s first choice right-back, Glen Johnson, also has a year to run on his current contract and has also not been in the best of form and Rodgers sees Valencia as a potential replacement for the England man with the added bonus being that the versatile South American can be used as a winger if and when necessary.

Van Gaal is set to conduct something of a major squad re-shuffle as he sets about repairing the club’s reputation following a disastrous campaign under David Moyes and an offer for Valencia could prove successful.

Man United paid Wigan Athletic £16m for Valencia back in 2009 and his price-tag is likely to be no more than half that figure today and it’s a price Rodgers is willing to pay regardless of the obvious ramifications inherent when it comes to raiding a club’s sworn enemy’s.
