An Eric Dier goal – his third of the season – has given Tottenham Hotspur a deserved half-time lead over Newcastle United.
Spurs have been dominant right from the first minute, when Harry Kane forced Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot into a smart save.
Elliot has since denied Erik Lamela with two fine stops, but, despite getting fingertips to Dier’s near-post header, he could not prevent Spurs from going ahead on 39 minutes.
Saturday’s defeat for Manchester United at Bournemouth means that Spurs can climb into the Premier League’s top four by winning today.
Victory over Newcastle would also leave Spurs just four points behind leaders Arsenal, who will be replaced at the top of the table by Leicester City if the Foxes beat Chelsea on Monday night.
