Manchester United striker Federico Macheda has secured a move away from Old Trafford after agreeing to join Bundesliga side Stuttgart on loan for the remainder of the season.

Italian under-21 international forward Macheda, who was on loan at Queens Park Rangers earlier in the season, was expected to make the move to Germany but also had the option of going to Spain to join Segunda Liga leaders Elche.

But the 21-year-old striker, who shot to prominence as a 17-year-old when scoring a late winner on his Manchester United debut but who since has been farmed out to Sampdoria and this season to QPR on loan, had agreed to try his luck in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart.

“I have followed the Bundesliga and of course I know Stuttgart,” Macheda, who is behind Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order at Old Trafford, told the Stuttgart website. “I’m delighted to be able to play for them now. I now have got to get to know my team-mates and settle in, because we have got many interesting games in three competitions to come.”

Stuttgart’s director of sport Fredi Bobic added: “We wanted a striker and we are pleased that we have found one now in Federico Macheda. Federico is young and hungry for success and he therefore fits in very well in Stuttgart.”
