Premier League strugglers Sunderland are on the verge of sealing a deal for Estudiantes centre-back Santiago Vergini, according to reports on Sky Sports.com.

The Black Cats have been chasing the highly rated Argentina international for some time now, however, with the player now said to be in the north east for talks with Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet, a deal for the 25-year-old is expected to be completed before the January transfer window slams shut for business for the season again at the end of the month.
However, Sunderland are expected to take the defender on loan at first, before signing Vergini on a permanent deal in the summer.
