Rumours had been rife in the British press on Thursday morning claiming that the veteran French coach had jetted off to Levante to watch the Catalan giants’ youngster Sergi Roberto in action.

Instead, the 64-year-old claimed that he was actually safely at home  in north London with his wife enjoying a romantic evening in watching Paris Saint-Germain take on Montpellier in the French Cup and Manchester United against Sunderland in the Capital One Cup.

“Last night (Wednesday) I watched PSG-Montpellier and United-Sunderland. At home. I don’t know (where that report came from), maybe my father was there,” said Wenger.

“Yesterday, I was at Heathrow but (later) I was at home – and you can check with my wife.

“The transfer window is not very romantic. It was not a transfer trip.”

Rumours had started to circulate after the Arsenal manager had been photographed at Heathrow on Wednesday, although as Wenger has now confirmed, he was returning to the country rather than leaving the UK at the time.
