The Indonesian football world is in mourning after 27 year-old Persiraja Banda player Akli Fairuz died in hospital following a terrible tackle by PSAP Sigli goalkeeper Agus Rohman.

Rohman raced off his line to meet the onrushing Fairuz, and his studs made contact with the attacker’s stomach.

Fairuz was substituted, but watched the remainder of the game from the stands before going to hospital, where he later passed away due to a ruptured intestine.

“I regretted what happened, why did he have to die from my kick? I am truly sorry to Akli, to his family, to everyone,” a clearly upset Rohman was quoted as saying by News.com.au.

“I will not accept it if they push all the blame onto me,” he added, having received death threats for his part in the tragedy.

The misdiagnosis of Fairuz’s issue casts a poor light on the medical staff present too, and it can only be hoped that lessons are learned from this terrible incident.
