Liverpool take on Southampton at Anfield in their Premier League opener on Sunday, and here’s how we think Brendan Rodgers’ men might take the field…
GK) Simon Mignolet
Barring late injury, Mignolet’s guaranteed a spot in goal for the season opener.
DR) Javier Manquillo
The young right-back impressed on debut against Dortmund last weekend, and will likely keep his spot in the side as a result, with Jon Flanagan having struggled with injury recently.
DL) Glen Johnson
Alberto Moreno will be Liverpool’s new left-back long-term, but this match has probably come too soon for the young Spaniard. Johnson will hope to get forward as much as possible at home.
DC) Martin Skrtel
Skrtel was favoured over Mamadou Sakho last weekend versus Dortmund, and he’ll likely get the nod again to partner the new £20m signing.
DC) Dejan Lovren
The former Southampton man will be relishing the clash against his former club, having left the South Coast to sign for Liverpool less than a month ago.
DMC) Steven Gerrard
The skipper will anchor Liverpool’s midfield, dictating his side’s tempo with his impressive array of passing.
MC) Jordan Henderson
Henderson’s outstanding pressing is essential to Liverpool’s style, and he’ll be one of the first names on the team sheet all season long.
MC) Joe Allen
We reckon Rodgers will plump for the diminutive Welshman instead of new signing Emre Can, despite the young German’s impressive physical nature. Allen’s crisp passing will help the transition from defence into attack.
AMR) Coutinho
Brilliant on the ball throughout the entirety of pre-season, the mercurial Brazilian has the ability to slice open Southampton’s defence at will.
AML) Raheem Sterling
The wonderkid will likely start on the left, able to either beat his man on the outside thanks to his blistering pace, or cut inside and link up with Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge in Liverpool’s ultra dynamic front three.
FC) Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge will be Liverpool’s talisman this season now Luis Suarez has gone. He’ll hope to hit the ground running on Sunday.
