Manchester United raised more than a few eyebrows when manager Louis van Gaal included youngsters Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard in their team to face Swansea City on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Flick through the pages below and find out how the duo would fit into a Premier League U21 XI:

GK) Jed Steer (Aston Villa)

Goalkeeper’s have something of a reputation for developing later on in their career, and with that in mind it comes as little surprise that there is a lack of Premier League quality goalkeeper who are 21 or younger (Thibaut Courtois is 22). However, Aston Villa’s Jed Steer (21) – an England youth international currently on loan with Doncaster Rovers – has a bright future.

RB) Calum Chambers (Arsenal)

The 19-year-old was a big money signing for Arsenal this summer. The former Southampton star may be used as versatile defensive cover this season, filling in at both right-back and centre-back, but is undoubtedly a star of the future.

LB) Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

The most expensive teenager of all time will have to wait to make his Manchester United debut, after being ruled out of the opening month of the season through injury. The left-back is already an England international and will be a cornerstone of the team for club and country for years to come.

CB) John Stones (Everton)

Everton’s 20-year-old defender was hugely impressive last season, earning a late call-up into England’s provisional World Cup squad. The former Barnsley man will be a key player for the Toffee’s this season.

CB) Tyler Blackett (Manchester United)

The 20-year-old England youth international impressed for United in pre-season, and earned himself a surprise call for Louis van Gaal’s first Premier League line-up. With the Manchester club playing a 3-5-2 formation, he could find himself regularly in the frame for the team and the bench.

CM) Ross Barkley (Everton)

The highly rated Everton and England star is one of the most talented young midfielders in the world, not just England, and will be a key man for club and country for years to come. Delighted Toffee’s fans by signing a new contract this summer.

CM) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal)

The Arsenal star burst onto the scene as a teenager. Now, as a 21-year-old, the player is beginning to mature – and has been used in a central midfield role rather than his traditional wide position. Has already been to two major tournaments with England, and will go to many more.

RW) Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)

One of the brightest young talents in the world, the 19-year-old is quickly developing into a key player for both club and country. A pacey winger who scores goals as well as providing them, will be hoping to help fill the Anfield void left by Luis Suarez next season.

AM) Adnan Januzaj (Manchester United)

The 19-year-old Belgian burst onto the Premier League scene at Old Trafford last season, and was one of the few bright sparks of David Moyes’ reign as manager. The attacking midfielder could be a key man at the club once again this season, both as a starter and as an impact substitute.

LW) Jesse Lingard (Manchester United)

Another surprise inclusion in United’s opening day line-up, the 21-year-old winger will be desperate to continue the fine form he showed last season during loan spells with Championship sides Leicester City, Birmingham City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

ST) Divock Origi (Liverpool)

A new signing for Liverpool this season, the 19-year-old is already off the mark for the season having scored for loan side Lille. The young striker made headlines at the World Cup this summer, when he scored for Belgium against Russia, and displaced Romelu Lukaku from the starting line-up.
