Mateo Musacchio will be staying at Villareal this summer, meaning that Tottenham will need to look elsewhere in their pursuit of a new central defender.

Reports in the Spanish press claim that the player’s current manager, Marcelino García Toral, is now confident of retaining the services of the 23-year-old Argentine, who has made 139 league appearances for the club since 2010.

Marcelino admitted recently that losing the player would be a massive blow to the team, with the coach going on to claim that his star man is: “closer to staying” than he believed him to be several weeks ago.

“I, like everyone else at the club, hope Mateo stays,” said Marcelino, “I see him closer to staying than leaving. But I can’t say that with 100% certainty.”

Other sources close to the club have informed AS that: “the way things are going now there won’t be any changes.” The player was part of the team that took on Italian side Sassuolo in a recent friendly, and looked content with life with the Spanish side.

With Villarreal just a week away from the start of the La Liga season, and two weeks away from the close of the summer transfer window, their opportunity to seek out a quality replacement for one of their prize assets is rapidly evaporating, making it near-impossible that they will allow the player to leave.
