Marcos Rojo has officially joined Manchester United for €20 million (approximately £16m), payable in three installments. Nani has moved to Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan in exchange.

The Red Devils will pay €10m up front, then two installments of €5m on each of December 1st 2014 and July 1st 2015 respectively.

In addition, should Manchester United sell Rojo in future for more than €23m, Sporting would receive 20% of the transfer fee.

The deals were confirmed by the Portuguese Primeira Liga giants via their Twitter account, with further details of the arrangement announced in a statement.

Nani returns to Sporting Lisbon after seven years in Manchester, and will hope to inject some flair into his old side’s attack.

Rojo, who reached the World Cup final with Argentina in Brazil this past summer before losing to Germany, will likely take the left centre-back role in Man Utd’s 3-5-2 formation, but will also offer an alternative to Luke Shaw at left wing back.

The 24 year-old becomes Van Gaal’s first major summer signing since taking the reins at Old Trafford, with deals for Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera having already been agreed before the Dutchman came on board.

After Manchester United lost 2-1 at home to Swansea City in Van Gaal’s first game, fans of the Red Devils will no doubt hope that Rojo becomes merely the first of many.
