It has already been a relatively busy summer of transfers for Arsenal with the arrival of four new players for a combined outlay of £66m, but a central midfielder remains a priority signing.

Here are the five candidates that manager Arsene Wenger has his eye on.

Lars Bender, Bayer Leverkusen

Probably the longest running target although interest in the Germany international from the Gunners appears to have waned in recent times, despite the fact Bender looks to be the ideal purchase.

This is because the 25-year-old is a committed defensive midfielder, who will happily sit in front of the back four and break up play and allow the more creative players to flourish.

William Carvalho, Sporting Lisbon

There has been great interest in this 22-year-old from the Premier League this summer, although Sporting are holding out for a significant fee for one their most promising players.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United have also shown interest in Carvalho, although it is the North Londoners who have had a £20m bid rejected for his services already.

Sami Khedira, Real Madrid

Of all the players on this list Khedira appears to be the most likely to leave his current club as the 27-year-old has now entered the final year of his contract at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

However, there are question marks over whether Wenger needs another box-to-box player like Khedira, even if the 2014 World Cup winner is available for a cut-price fee.

Adrien Rabiot, Paris Saint-Germain

The youngest option by quite some way and as a result also the cheapest, with Wenger considering bringing in the 19-year-old and moulding him into his ideologies.

Rabiot has found chances at PSG more limited than he would have liked due to the plethora of talent available to boss Laurent Blanc and the Frenchman may well value a switch to England.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Southampton

Finally it’s a Saints star who has long been linked with a move from St Mary’s ever since the exodus from the club started earlier in the summer and has since seen five major departures from the playing squad.

Yet new manager Ronald Koeman has said Schneiderlin is not for sale at any price, although any football fan worth his salt knows that often means very little in the current game.
