Top 10 Players Manchester United Could Target In The January Transfer Window

Manchester United’s summer spending spree looks set to continue in January…

Manchester United spent over £150m this summer in an extraordinary spree that saw them bring in the likes of Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao.

However, it seems that the Red Devils are not satisfied, and plan to continue their trend of big spending during the January transfer window. According to reports in The Guardian, manager Louis van Gaal still wants to add a top-line central midfielder and central defender to his squad.

Here are ten players that he could target:

10) Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton)

Southampton will be desperate to hang on to the Frenchman following their summer exodus, but his growing influence in the Saints team is clear to see. The World Cup midfielder has a bright future ahead of him.

9) Nigel de Jong (AC Milan)

A player Van Gaal knows well from his time as the Netherlands manager – experienced and proved at Premier League level. However, United fans would have to overlook the fact that the midfield enforcer once played for their local rivals Manchester City.

8) Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina)

The Colombian winger shone alongside James Rodriguez at the World Cup this summer, but decided to stay put during the transfer window. A strong start to the Serie A season will likely see another battle for his signature in January.

7) William Carvalho (Sporting Lisbon)

One of the highest rated young midfielders in world football, it came as something of a surprise when he finished the transfer window still with Sporting Lisbon. Expect several teams to competing for the Portuguese star at the turn of the year.

6) Paul Pogba (Juventus)

A former star of Manchester United’s academy, who left the club back in 2012. Since then, he has established himself as a star of both the Juventus and French national team. At just 21-years-old, he can be a star for over a decade.

5) Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)

The exciting German winger is likely to be another player surrounded by intense transfer speculation come the next window. Borussia Dortmund are desperate to hang on to one of their prize assets, but a big money bid could still lure him away.

4) Joao Moutinho (AS Monaco)

AS Monaco have already let Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez leave the club this year, and another of their expensive big names could be the next star on his way out of the exit door. The former Porto man would be an excellent addition.

3) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

The Chilean playmaker is rated as one of the best midfielders in the world, and was the subject of a media storm this summer, and rumours and counter rumours of his seemingly impending move to Old Trafford continued to circle. United could return for him in January.

2) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

Van Gaal is a big fan of the German centre-half, and the World Cup winner would undoubtedly be the dream signing for the club’s ailing back-line. As with Reus, Dortmund are desperate to hang on to the player, and are likely to hold out for a big fee.

1) Kevin Strootman (Roma)

United’s number one target according to The Guardian. Another player Van Gaal knows from his time with the Dutch national team, the Roma playmaker has been struggling with an injury for the last year, but is closing in on a return to full-fitness.
