Brendan Rodgers is showing interest in popular French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, who is out of contract at Marseille in the summer, the Daily Mirror reports.

The 28-year-old has not signed a new deal with the French club leaving Rodgers considering a cheap January move to help bolster his flailing attacking options.

Jordan Henderson has defended under-fire Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, according to the Daily Star.

The Kop hero, 34, had copped stick for being off the pace so far this season, but Henderson said: “Stevie’s still one of the best players in the Premier League.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers gave up his free Sunday to join striker Daniel Sturridge, 25, in a training session to test his fitness ahead of this week’s Champions League match in Basel, the Daily Mail reports.

Sturridge, who has missed Liverpool’s last five matches after picking up a thigh injury on international duty with England, was put through his paces at the club’s Melwood training ground – with Rodgers also taking part in the same routine under the watchful eye of two of the club’s coaching staff.

Liverpool are favourites to secure the signature of Marek Hamsik from Napoli, the Daily Mirror believes.

The Slovakian attacking-midfielder is likely to be available in the January transfer window with club bosses looking to make changes to the current regime – which could also see Rafa Benitez sacked.

Adam Lallana believes he is approaching full fitness after a solid display for Liverpool, according to the Daily Express.

The midfielder shone despite the Reds dropping points at home to Everton on Saturday.
