Five Summer Transfers Selling Clubs Now Regret: Luis Suarez, Chelsea & Man United Deals Included

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Newcastle United also feature.

A month has now passed since the summer transfer window closed.

Some clubs, Chelsea included, will be rightly delighted with how their pre-season deals have left them looking.

However, many other clubs are likely to be rather regretful.

We have identified five players who really should never have been moved on…

5. Xabi Alonso – Real Madrid (to Bayern Munich)

Not only is Alonso among the best passers in the world, the former Liverpool man is also disciplined defensively – something that is uncommon among Real’s current crop of midfielders.

The European champions have already looked vulnerable in the middle of the park in multiple games this season.

One can’t help but fear for them for when they come up against top quality opposition.

4. Hatem Ben Arfa – Newcastle United (to Hull City on loan)

It is claimed that Ben Arfa was allowed to leave Newcastle on loan because he was unpopular in the dressing room at St James’ Park.

If that is the case then perhaps Alan Pardew should have found him 10 new teammates!

Not one member of Newcastle’s lifeless existing squad has the ability to destroy defences and excite the crowd like Ben Arfa did. Going down…

3. Cesc Fabregas – Barcelona (to Chelsea)

Fabregas was clearly undervalued at Barcelona.

In just eight games for Chelsea, he has proved that he is truly world class, scoring one goal and provided seven assists.

Barcelona may not be missing him yet, but Fabregas is one of the few players on the planet who are capable of replacing Xavi.

When Xavi, who is now 34, finally leaves the first-team squad, Barca will surely rue getting rid of the former Arsenal skipper.

Patrice Evra – Manchester United (to Juventus)

United’s defending has been simply desperate this season.

The club’s decision to sell former captain Evra didn’t seem to make much sense to start with and, after watching Ashley Young struggle at left wing-back for three games, it now seems just ridiculous.

Luis Suarez – Liverpool (to Barcelona)

Yes, he is troubled. Yes, he wanted to leave. And, yes, he was destined to miss the first two months of the season through suspension after biting an opponent for the third time in his career. But Suarez carried Liverpool.

With Suarez, the Reds were a match for anyone – genuine title contenders.

Without him, they are a million miles away from Chelsea and Man City.

Of course, £75m is a great price, but even that amount of money won’t compensate for the disappointment of many more years without a domestic league trophy…
