The Reds are desperate to sign a top class replacement for disappointing summer signing Mario Balotelli, who has been poor since his £16m move from AC Milan.

Having lost Luis Suarez to Barcelona over the summer, Brendan Rodgers is determined to bring in new players upfront to replace the influence of the world class Uruguayan forward, who scored 31 goals in the Premier League last season to help the club sustain a serious title challenge.

Liverpool have started poorly this year, however, and Martinez could be the answer to their problems as they look to get their season back on track in the second half of the campaign.

The Colombian international has looked superb in Portugal, showing himself to be a highly prolific player to attract the interest of several top clubs in the last few transfer windows.

Liverpool now look to be leading the chase for his signature as Rodgers already makes his plans for January, with Balotelli’s situation at the club forcing the Reds into serious action in the transfer market.
