Liverpool Ponder Four-Man Clearout To Fix Problems In January Transfer Window: Report

Reds to axe four first-teamers in January overhaul?

Liverpool’s nightmare start to the new season has been the club linked with a number of changes in the January transfer window, mainly involving players coming in, though a number of first-team regulars could also be on their way out of Anfield as Brendan Rodgers plots a revamp of his side.

The Reds struck a perfect balance last season as Rodgers assembled a confident team that pushed Manchester City to the final day of the season in the race for the Premier League title, but the team now looks in transition after Luis Suarez’s departure to Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool will continue rebuilding in January, with these four players possibly heading for the exit after failing to impress so far this term, with speculation that other clubs are interested in securing their services.

1) Steven Gerrard

A club legend no doubt, but Liverpool midfielder and captain Steven Gerrard arguably looks past his best now at the age of 34, and is nearing the end of his contract. It may be that the former England international will leave in January in a cut-price deal, with Inter Milan reportedly lining up a shock bid for his signature this winter.

2) Mario Balotelli

After an awful start to life at Liverpool since his £16m summer move from AC Milan, Mario Balotelli may be flogged by the club already as Napoli reportedly show an interest in the inconsistent Italian international. It remains to be seen if the Reds will let Balotelli leave so quickly, but his form is a worry and they could almost certainly do better.

3) Fabio Borini

In another possible move to Inter Milan, Fabio Borini is another Liverpool player not impressing and supposedly in the Italian giants’ sights in the upcoming transfer window, with the former Chelsea man clearly not good enough to improve this struggling team.

4) Glen Johnson

Another Liverpool player who could be heading for a surprise move to Italy is under-performing right-back Glen Johnson. The England defender looks past his best and may begin talks with AS Roma over a summer switch on a free transfer for next season, as he will be allowed to talk to other clubs from January onwards.
