It is reported that summer signing Angel Di Maria has played a big part in helping push the deal through, with the former Real Madrid star helping persuade his fellow countrymen to join him in Manchester.

United are known to be keen on making more signings this January after a busy summer, with defence now a priority for van Gaal after he previously brought in mostly attacking players.

Although this is another expensive deal, it looks fairly good value for money as United seem set to fix issues in both defence and defensive midfield in one exciting double deal.

The two players thought to be on their way to United are as follows:

1) Nicolas Otamendi (Valencia)

A centre-back with a great reputation, Nicolas Otamendi could be allowed to leave Valencia for around £40m this January. The 26-year-old has previously impressed greatly at Porto, attracting interest from United and other top clubs in the past, though his future may now finally be settled as he looks to come in and help the Red Devils strengthen at the back.

2) Enzo Perez (Benfica)

For a further £24m, Benfica’s versatile box-to-box midfield player Enzo Perez also looks to be in United’s sights, and is supposedly van Gaal’s ideal candidate to come in and play on the right of centre in a midfield diamond formation at Old Trafford.
