16) FC Basel

Into the knockout stages ahead of Liverpool, FC Basel still don’t look a convincing side and are surely the weakest in the competition.

15) Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen did well to qualify from a fairly even group, but are not serious contenders to go far in the rest of the competition.

14) AS Monaco

Group winners ahead of Leverkusen, AS Monaco have some big names but don’t look like having a strong enough side all round to go far in the Champions League.

13) Shakhtar Donetsk

Always a decent bet for an upset, Shakhtar Donetsk have a strong team with Luiz Adriano in particularly fine form this season, but probably not enough to go too far.

12) Schalke

Managed by former European champion Roberto Di Matteo, Schalke are an unpredictable side who did well to finish 2nd in their group, though they were thrashed 5-0 by Chelsea along the way.

11) Porto

A team with plenty of exciting players, Porto have strong European pedigree and could be a decent outside bet to reach the semi-finals if they’re lucky.

10) Borussia Dortmund

Not quite the team they were when they reached the final in 2013, but Borussia Dortmund can’t be ruled out after winning a difficult group.

9) Arsenal

Although only second to Dortmund in their group, Arsenal look the slightly better side overall this season, but their record in this competition is extremely disappointing.

8) Juventus

A team who will want to improve in the Champions League, could this be the year Juventus finally make an impact in Europe?

7) Manchester City

Another team who needs to improve in the Champions League, Manchester City can take plenty of confidence from their dramatic qualification in their final group game.

6) Atletico Madrid

Last season’s finalists, Atletico Madrid perhaps don’t look as strong this season but can’t be ruled out with their miracle worker manager Diego Simeone to inspire them.

5) Paris Saint-Germain

Second in a difficult group, Paris Saint-Germain’s expensively-assembled side will be hoping to progress from last season and can’t be ruled out with the quality of players available to them.

4) Barcelona

Not a vintage Barcelona side, but one that won a difficult group and has Lionel Messi looking somewhere near his best again, with Luis Suarez and Neymar also part of a world class attack.

3) Chelsea

With three players from the side that reached the final for Atletico last season, Chelsea look incredibly strong this season and will be among the main favourites to go all the way.

2) Bayern Munich

Champions from 2013, Bayern Munich have a great record in this competition and look as strong as ever this season with a world class squad.

1) Real Madrid

Last season’s champions, Real Madrid are surely the favourites to win the Champions League again with some of the best players in the world and a great run of results so far this season.
