In five years time van Gaal and a number of their high profile players are unlikely to be there and here is how CaughtOffside thinks the Red Devils may lineup in 2020.

GK – David de Gea

Provided they can ward off the interest of Real Madrid – with on-field success – the goalkeeper will still only be 29-years-old and could be competing with Peter Schmeichel to be considered the club’s greatest between the sticks.

RB – Nathaniel Clyne

With Rafael failing to impress and Antonio Valencia not a natural fit at right-back there is no reason to think United wouldn’t move for this Southampton ace, who is only 23-years-old at the moment.

CB – Phil Jones

If he can start proving his fitness more consistently then Jones could go onto be the world-class centre-back many thought he would be when he was signed from Blackburn Rovers for £17m.

CB – Tyler Blackett

Jonny Evans has never looked quite up to the task and there are doubts over whether Marcos Rojo can cut it as well, but along with Paddy McNair this youth product has been one of the real positives at Old Trafford this season.

LB – Luke Shaw

Completing an all English back line is a left-back who at 19-years-old was signed for a whopping £27m and there is much expectation for the former Saints man to succeed as a result.

DM – Daley Blind

Although he was one of the less high profile van Gaal signings he has arguably been the most successful and could easily make the defensive midfield role his own for years to come.

CM – Kevin Strootman

Heavily linked with the club ever since his fellow Dutchman and former international manager took charge and at 24-years-old could well be at his peak in five years time.

CM – Morgan Schneiderlin

This may seem a little out there, but the Frenchman has proven with his Premier League performances that he is ready to make up the step up from the Saints and is clearly keen to be playing Champions League football.

CAM – Adnan Januzaj

Clearly has potential, but is struggling to quite realise it currently, although van Gaal sees this Belgian as more of a No.10 than a winger and maybe that could be his future role in the team.

ST – James Wilson

Still just 19-years-old this youngster is competing with the likes of Radamel Falcao, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie for a place in the team and not looking out of place and the club are known for promoting from within.

ST – Harry Kane

It may be too soon to truly tell whether Kane’s current form at Tottenham Hotspur is a temporary thing or here to stay, but if it is the latter then the 21-year-old could maybe be Man United’s next Teddy Sheringham.
