The 24-year-old’s current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of next season, and United have so far struggled to make progress over a new deal.

De Gea has supposedly grown frustrated with receiving a lack of praise from Van Gaal, and the issue has now escalated to the point where the stopper wishes to leave.

If he does go, United will undoubtedly move quickly to replace him, and here are five candidates we think could fit the bill:

5) Asmir Begovic (Stoke City)

Has regularly been linked with a move to a ‘bigger’ club in the past, but has thus far remained loyal to Stoke. Still young in goalkeeping terms at 27, the Bosnian has been an integral part of his side’s success in the Premier League, making 151 league appearances in five years.

4) Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona)

The German proved that he had both great quality and great potential during his time with Borussia Monchengladbach, with his form earning a move to Barcelona last summer. However, he’s still awaiting his La Liga debut, and he could grow frustrated if he does not become the recognised first choice.

3) Guillermo Ochoa (Malaga)

The Mexican was one of the surprise stars of last summer’s World Cup, but like the Barcelona stopper he’s still awaiting his La Liga debut, in this case with Malaga. The 29-year-old made his name in France with AC Ajaccio, and could be worth taking a chance on.

2) Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen)

Still only 22, the German youth team international has become a regular in the Leverkusen team over recent seasons, and has already made over 100 league appearances. He became the youngest keeper to play in the Champions League when he featured against Chelsea in 2011.

1) Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur)

Undoubtedly one of the finest goalkeepers around, the Frenchman deserves the chance to be playing Champions League football, and may well move if he continues to be unable to achieve that at Spurs. Still only 28, he’s arguably the only world class option that would likely be available to them.
