We look at just what the United line-up could look like next season, see the incredible XI below:
GK: David De Gea
A transfer saga that could run and run but Jorge Mendes hinted De Gea could remain at United early last month.
RB: Nathaniel Clyne
He’s been linked with United for around 18 months and could finally get his wish after he was revealed to be on van Gaal’s shortlist and the Dutch coach’s continued mistrust of Rafael Da Silva.
CB: Mats Hummels
A long-term target who United so dearly want especially given the plans to completely revamp their defence.
CB: Aymeric Laporte
The youngster looks set to be a star of the future and is already and experienced head at the back making over 70 appearances before the age of 20.
LB: Marcos Rojo
A tough first season with a steep learning curve so far for the Argentine but it looks as if he could develop into a robust Premier League hardened centre-back if given time.
CM: Ander Herrera
For some reason not given the time his ability deserves by van Gaal but seems to be gradually earning his trust becoming United’s driving force from the middle.
CM: Kevin Strootman
The day Strootman signs for United will be the day the collective football universe breathes a heavy sigh of relief after one of the most protracted transfers sagas of recent memory.
His injury woes might put a blocker on any move but if he could get back to full fitness and prove so, expect van Gaal to swoop.
LM: Ashley Young
Revitalised under van Gaal after a season of indifference under David Moyes, he’s an integral part of United’s attack and width.
RM: Angel Di Maria
Whatever woes befall the Argentine in his first season in the Premier League he will likely never be sold after just a year.
Expect the Argentine to come back a revitalised figure next season after a short break to get his head back in the game and show the kind of skill we know he has.
CAM: Wayne Rooney
The club captain has been the only real ever-present for United this season and whilst his position looks set to change to the whims of van Gaal don’t expect his status as a starter.
ST: Edinson Cavani
He’s not had the best of times battling with the personified ego that is Zlatan Ibrahimovic but has still managed to make his mark at PSG.
A return to a less pressurised side where he has a team built around his needs could see Cavani return to his status as one of Europe’s deadliest strikers.
