The Chilean has found himself under pressure at the Etihad in recent weeks with the side off the pace in the Premier League title race and looking likely to be knocked out of the Champions League. However, his representative is clear that the 61-year-old wants to stay with the Citizens if he can.

Martinez said: “Manuel has another year on his contract, and he intends to respect it. I don’t know, however, what the leadership’s intentions are. Pellegrini has Italian roots, he’s also been on holiday in Naples. He’s a lover of language and culture. He greatly appreciates Italy and Neapolitan culture. You never know in football.”

However, should the former Malaga boss be sacked, then he is already eyeing up a getaway plan involving the potentially vacant Napoli post.

The Italian team may be without a manager as current boss Rafael Benitez could be set for a move back to England.

The former Liverpool boss has been linked to several jobs in the Premier League.

His agent continued: “Could he replace [Rafa] Benitez? Pellegrini does not allow me to talk about him in relation to a position at a club which already has a Coach under contract. We have to wait a few more months, then if [Napoli President Aurelio] De Laurentiis calls, we’ll discuss it.”
