The 43-year-old has been the caretaker manager for the last week, after previous boss Enderson Moreira was sacked on the 5th March.

Fernandes is a Santos legend, having played for the club between 1992 and 1998. He was also been their assistant manager since 2011.

“Everybody clamoured for it and we have to listen to what the fans, the players and the board says,” said president Modesto Roma Júnior in a statement on the club’s official website.

Meanwhile Santos’ greatest ever player, Pele, also supports the move, saying: “I like the decision. He is one of us and he represents a new generation.”

Santos are currently top of the Campeonato Paulista. They are unbeaten after nine games and sit ten points clear of second-placed XV de Piracicaba.
