Manchester United flop backed to shine next season by club legend

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has tipped the club’s record signing Angel Di Maria to overcome a difficult first season at Old Trafford and become a success in English football next year.

The Argentine winger signed for the Red Devils last summer in a reported £59.7million deal (via BBC Sport) from La Liga giants Real Madrid and after a promising start to his career in Manchester, his form has dipped considerably and has struggled to force his way into Louis van Gaal’s starting XI since the turn of the year.

He was an unused substitute in United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday afternoon as the club celebrated a return to next season’s Champions League, but there has been speculation that Di Maria was waving goodbye to the Old Trafford faithful at the end of the game.

It was reported late last week by The Independent that United were planning to offload the 27-year-old in order to finance a move for Gareth Bale when the transfer window opens but Neville says he would like to see the Di Maria given a chance to prove himself just like how Juan Mata and Ashley Young have done so under van Gaal this season:

“United do need wide players.” The former United defender said on his Sky Sports podcast.

“I believe in Di Maria as a player. We’ve watched him a lot for Real Madrid and you could see his level of performance was outstanding.”

“Ashley Young has had a fantastic season but, as much as he’s done well out there in recent months, Juan Mata isn’t a wide right player.” Neville added.
