The German international is thought to have been a top priotity defensive target for the Red Devils for some time now, but reports suggest he wants to stay at his current club Dortmund for another season.

This will no doubt come as a big blow for United as they prepare to strengthen for next season, but it now seems that manager Louis van Gaal has identified two new options to come in in that position.

The two players are based in Spain’s La Liga, and are as follows:

1) Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)

One of the best centre-backs in the world for the last couple of years, Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin has been immense for the club, helping them to the La Liga title and Champions League final last season, also showing the fine habit for scoring important goals. The Uruguayan is now being considered by United ahead of the summer.

2) Nicolas Otamendi (Valencia)

Another fine player showing solid form in Spain is Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi. The Argentine is now a target for van Gaal to solve that centre-back issue that has been a problem for the club for so long.
