A look at five clubs who could be set to smash their previous transfer records this summer, featuring Premier League giants plotting ambitious buys…

1) Manchester United

With Manchester United supposedly targeting a move for Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, the Red Devils could break their transfer record for the second summer in a row by raiding the Bernabeu, with the Welshman set to cost around £80m, more than the £59.7m signing of Angel Di Maria last year.

2) Chelsea

Possibly set to cost around £58m, Juventus starlet and Chelsea target Paul Pogba would become the most expensive Blues signing of all time, eclipsing the £50m they paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres. Bale has also been linked with Chelsea, and would again cost a club-record fee if he moves for anywhere near the reported £80m.

3) Liverpool

One of the best strikers in the world, Karim Benzema has been linked with a £40m move to Liverpool in recent times, which would be £5m more than they paid for current record-signing Andy Carroll, showing just how ridiculous the transfer market can be!

4) Arsenal

Valued at around £50m, Marco Reus could leave Borussia Dortmund this summer and has been linked with Arsenal on a number of occasions. If he did move to the Emirates Stadium for that price, he would move ahead of fellow German Mesut Ozil as the most expensive purchase in the Gunners’ history.

5) Manchester City

Finally, Manchester City may be forced to pay as much as £50m to sign Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling this summer, which would be a new record for them to eclipse the £38m paid for Sergio Aguero back in 2011.
