Mateo Kovacic’s move from Inter Milan to Liverpool looks on this summer, with rumours that a fee has been agreed and a verbal agreement is in place for the Croatian international to make the switch to Anfield.

Still, is this 21-year-old midfielder really the best option the Reds could find? Here’s a look at five other realistic targets who’d arguably be better value for money for Brendan Rodgers’ side…

1) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

A top target for Arsenal and Manchester United, Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal has also been linked with Liverpool at points, and could move for less than £30m this summer. For a player of his proven quality and experience, the Chilean international would surely be a more worthwhile buy for the Reds.

2) Miralem Pjanic (AS Roma)

A tad expensive at £37m, but AS Roma’s classy playmaker Miralem Pjanic has also been linked with Liverpool in recent times and looks absolutely ideal to replace Steven Gerrard, with great work-rate, a fine range of passing and the eye for some superb long-range goals.

3) Ilkay Gundogan (Borussia Dortmund)

Available for less than £20m after snubbing a new contract at Borussia Dortmund, it’s hard to understand why Liverpool aren’t in the running to sign Ilkay Gundogan. The German international is a great all-rounder who is wanted by Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona, and the Reds should be looking at him as well.

4) Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)

A player who has been linked with Liverpool before, Jack Wilshere endured a difficult season at Arsenal and may be available for the right price. After a great display for England against Slovenia, the 23-year-old showed what he can do at his best, and he has all the qualities needed to replace Steven Gerrard if he can stay fit.

5) Yohan Cabaye (Paris Saint-Germain)

Out of favour at PSG, Yohan Cabaye was superb in the Premier League during his time with Newcastle United, and would be a fine fit at Liverpool this summer. With clubs like Crystal Palace and West Ham United being linked with the Frenchman, it surely wouldn’t be too hard for the Reds to throw their hat into the ring?
