The former wonderkid looks set to leave the Stade Velodrome this summer following the club’s failure to reach the Champions League. The Southern giants look set for a summer exodus; Andre Ayew has already moved to Swansea City [The Guardian], while Andre-Pierre Gignac [Birmingham Mail] and Giannelli Imbula [TalkSPORT] have also been linked with a move away from the Phoceens.
The Premier League has been mooted as Thauvin’s likely destination. Chelsea have previously been linked with his signature, while Spurs and Valencia are believed to be keen on acquiring the talented dribbler [Daily Mail].
However, La Gazzetta dello Sport [via Le 10 Sport] now understand that AS Roma are also targeting Thauvin and are looking to make some headway on their EPL rivals to sign him over the coming months.
French coach Rudi Garcia is believed to be a big fan of the winger, and would be prepared to spend the anticipated €13 million that OM are believed to be looking for for one of their prized assets.
However, they aren’t the only Italian side believed to be interested in the right-sided star, with both Inter Milan and Lazio understood to be monitoring the player’s situation.
While Thauvin showed flashes of brilliance for the Olympians last season, he remains prone to inconsistency and often drifts in and out of matches. Similarly, his decision-making has raised doubts about his ability to thrive at the truly elite end of the game, and it remains to be seen whether he could prosper in the Premier League.
Thauvin previously represented SC Bastia and Garcia’s former club LOSC Lille (without making an appearance).
This season, under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa, Thauvin featured 36 times in Ligue 1, contributing four assists and scoring five goals.
