Chelsea and Manchester United are both interested in the 30-year-old, according to the Daily Express, but it now looks like the defender will be on his way to the San Siro. The Serie A side have apparently agreed a €12 million fee up front, followed by €3 million in add ons, while the player will be earning €2.7 million a season.

The centre-back saw his place in the Atleti team taken by Jose Gimenez in the second half of last season, and only played 23 La Liga games as a result. With the 20-year-old likely to be staying in the starting line up for the foreseeable future, it seems the older player has decided to move away.

Having been a key part of the miraculous La Liga championship and Champions League final appearance in the 2013-14 campaign from the Rojiblancos, there has been no shortage of interest. The experienced star also has 18 appearances for the Brazilian national team, further proving his pedigree.

The Red Devils will be worried about this development as they have also suffered blows in their pursuits of Valencia ace Nicolas Otamendi and Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels according to the Express article. They could also be losing goalkeeper David De Gea to Real Madrid, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

Meanwhile the Blues aren’t in need of a centre-back as badly, with John Terry and Gary Cahill still going strong after conceding just 32 goals in the Premier League last time round. They also have 20-year-old Kurt Zouma as a back-up to the pair, so should be okay without reinforcements for the next campaign if they’re unable to bring any in.
