As a result manager Louis van Gaal may well be on the lookout for a different player. Here are five stars that the Dutchman could go after…

5) Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid

With David De Gea looking likely to join Los Blancos, the Red Devils could look to get the 29-year-old in return. He would greatly improve their defence, which had to rely heavily on their goalkeeper last time round. With Memphis Depay already at Old Trafford to improve the front line this could be exactly what they need to improve on their fourth place in the Premier League.

4) Gareth Bale, Real Madrid

If they don’t manage to get Ramos, then United could go after his teammate instead. The former Tottenham man scored 17 goals and grabbed 10 assists last season, but was still booed by the Bernabeu faithful and could be lured in to leaving as a result. The Welshman could instantly make the Red Devils title challengers if he joined.

3) Marco Reus, Borussia Dortmund

Although the forward signed a new contract last season, but may be enticed in to going to Old Trafford after Jurgen Klopp left the Westfalenstadion. The 26-year-old scored ten goals and got six assists in 24 games during the last campaign despite injuries, and could be similar to Bale in his impact.

2) Paul Pogba, Juventus

Let go by the Red Devils for nothing back in 2012, it would be a big stand down for the club if they were to re-sign the 22-year-old. However, it would be worth it to do so, with the midfielder bringing exactly the power and ability that they need in the middle of the park.

1) Kevin De Bruyne, Wolfsburg

The 24-year-old managed an unbelievable 25 assists and ten goals last time round, and could be a creative force in the mould of Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas for United. After looking lacking in ideas against teams that sat back last season, that is exactly what Louis van Gaal needs.
