However, the Gunners can do better than this overrated 27-year-old, who has never been a sure fire starter for the Blaugranas.

Here are seven players they should go after instead…

7) Raheem Sterling, Liverpool

The England international’s long running contract negotiations have been well publicised, and the Gunners could take advantage. One of the best young talents in Europe, he could well be worth the huge transfer fees being touted.

6) Marco Reus, Borussia Dortmund

Although the forward signed a new contract last season, the departure of manager Jurgen Klopp may mean he can be tempted away from the Westfalenstadion. Undoubtedly one of the best wingers out there but can also be used centrally, the Germany international would be a major transfer coup.

5) Lucas Moura, PSG

Has amazing potential, but has seen his career stall slightly in Paris. Perhaps a move to the Emirates and a manager known for developing young players could be just what the 22-year-old needs.

4) Ezequiel Lavezzi, PSG

If the North London club are unable to get Lucas, then they could go after his 30-year-old teammate. Nine goals and four assists in 47 games, of which only 29 were starts, show that the Argentina international can still make a difference at the top level.

3) Stephan El Shaarawy, AC Milan

Since scoring 19 goals as a 19-year-old in 2013-14 the youngster has seen injuries take playing time from him. However, similarly to Lucas, the Italy international could just need a new setting and Arsene Wenger to get back to his best.

2) Xherdan Shaqiri, Inter Milan

If Stoke can agree a fee for the 23-year-old then the Gunners sure as hell can do so as well. One of the stars of the 2014 World Cup, the Switzerland international will be a brilliant signing for whoever picks him up.

1) Antoine Griezmann, Atletico Madrid

25 goals in 54 games during the France international’s debut season at the Vicente Calderon have alerted many to his ability, even after he had been impressing at Real Sociedad. It may cost a lot to bring the 24-year-old to the Emirates, but he would make Wenger’s side instant title challengers.
