With Manchester United announcing the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger today, here’s a look at five current Old Trafford stars who should perhaps be fearing for their place in the starting lineup next season…
1) Ander Herrera
Despite some fine form for United last season, Ander Herrera was in and out of Louis van Gaal’s side for much of the campaign and will certainly not be guaranteed a starting spot for the Reds now.
2) Juan Mata
Used in a variety of midfield positions, Juan Mata is another United player who will be looking over his shoulder now with the arrival of Schweinsteiger, having failed to truly show his best Chelsea form in a Red shirt.
3) Marouane Fellaini
A much improved player last season, Marouane Fellaini may now be facing a fight to win over his manager again as Schweinsteiger would surely be the preferred option over the Belgian in the centre.
4) Angel Di Maria
Although not quite a player who plays in the same position, Angel Di Maria has been used in the centre for United and was not at his best last season, while Schweinsteiger could even prove a better option out wide than the struggling Argentine.
5) Michael Carrick
After some injuries last season, Michael Carrick now faces an even harder task to get into the United team with the arrival of Schweinsteiger, who can play as a deep-lying defensive midfield player as well.
