Manchester United look set to complete a deal to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, though the 30-year-old looks a little past his best after being allowed to leave the Allianz Arena for suspiciously cheap, so here’s five better options the Red Devils should be considering…
1) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)
One of the best midfielders in the world and a player at the peak of his game, Juventus star Arturo Vidal has been linked with Manchester United in the past and would be a great fit in Louis van Gaal’s midfield, though Arsenal are also chasing the Chilean box-to-box player.
2) Miralem Pjanic (AS Roma)
A classy playmaker, Miralem Pjanic is a superb all-round midfielder with hsi best years ahead of him, though he is also likely to be expensive (around £37m) and has been identified as a top target for Liverpool this summer.
3) Luka Modric (Real Madrid)
Linked with United in the past, Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric would be another superb buy in the middle of the park if the club felt like spending a little extra. The Croatian has already shown he can do it in the Premier League during his days with Tottenham and looks just what Van Gaal’s side needs.
4) Javier Pastore (Paris Saint-Germain)
A midfielder in superb form for PSG last season, Javier Pastore is an underrated talent that United may be able to get for surprisingly cheap as the French giants continue to track bigger names in midfield like Paul Pogba.
5) Koke (Atletico Madrid)
Finally, United would be well advised to make a big-money bid for Atletico Madrid attacking midfielder Koke, who is one of the best young players in the world in his position, having been linked with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Barcelona in the past.
