Chelsea close to £41.7m double Bundesliga RAID to shore up defence

Chelsea are fighting AS Roma for the signature of Stuttgart star Antonio Rudiger, according to talkSPORT.

The Serie A side have made an enquiry for the player, but have seen that promptly turned down. However, the Giallorossi are set to go back in regardless, needing to strengthen if they are going to catch up with Juventus domestically.

A £20 million offer could also be on the way from Stamford Bridge, with the 22-year-old a potential replacement for the ageing John Terry. At 34-years-old, Jose Mourinho is going to have to find a replacement for the former England international soon, and the Germany international could be the man for the job.

Currently in the treatment room with a knee injury, the centre-back currently has two years left on contract with Stuttgart. As a result, the Bundesliga outfit may look to cash in now before the deal starts running out.

Chelsea have also agreed a deal with Augsburg ace Abdul Baba Rahman [Daily Mail], which could end the spending on their back line.

The 21-year-old would be a great replacement for Filipe Luis, being both talented enough to push Cesar Azpilicueta for a place in the first team and young enough to improve as his understudy. A £21.7 million deal has been agreed for the youngster, with £14 million paid up front and the rest in various playing bonuses.

Both of these moves could be a major boost to the Blues, who are yet to improve their first team from last season. Although they won the Premier League title last time round, the improvement of teams such as Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United mean that it will be a lot closer this time round.
