GK: Hugo Lloris – 7/10

Tottenham’s skipper was rarely tested, but he remained alert throughout. The French stopper displayed excellent pace and judgement to race off his line to sweep up a couple of Liverpool through balls.

RB: Kyle Walker – 6/10

Didn’t get forward as often as he might have liked, but did his defensive job well having composed himself after a few early mistakes.

CB: Toby Alderweireld – 7/10

Solid as ever. His arrival this summer has been one of the main factors behind Tottenham’s huge defensive improvement.

CB: Jan Vertonghen – 8/10

Excellent! Vertonghen didn’t give fellow Belgian Origi a sniff in open play and showed brilliant composure when put under pressure by the high Liverpool press.

LB: Danny Rose – 6/10

Was in the wars as James Milner kicked lumps out of him throughout. Rose was the more adventurous of the two Spurs full-backs, but did not do a great deal when he did reach the byline.

CM: Dele Alli – 7/10

Very mature performance from the attack-minded teenager, who was given more defensive responsibility than usual. Still managed to get involved going forward from time to time.

CM: Mousa Dembele – 8/10

Filled in excellently for suspended anchor man Eric Dier. Tackled very well and with purpose and was typically composed in possession. This type of performance is needed from him more often.

AM: Nacer Chadli – 5/10

Was subbed after 10 minutes with an injury, having touched the ball just once. Chadli was replaced by Clinton N’Jie (5/10), who looked very raw, but did pose an occasional threat.

AM: Christian Eriksen – 7/10

Frequently found pockets of space between Emrc Can and Lucas Leiva. An industrious burst in from the left helped set Kane up for one of Tottenham’s best chances.

AM: Erik Lamela – 6/10

Combative, but not very creative. Replaced by Andros Townsend (5/10) in the 87th minute.

ST: Harry Kane – 7/10

Led the attack well, using his impressive strength to hold off Mamadou Sakho on multiple occasions. Kane’s best chance of two came in the first half, when he was denied by Simon Mignolet. He should have scored.

At the other end, Kane was the defensive hero in the opening 10 minutes as he hacked the ball off the goal line, after Origi had struck the crossbar with a header.
