Arsenal eyeing Barcelona starlet in £4.4m steal

Arsene Wenger is showing plenty of eagerness to start the January transfer window. With a deal already believed to be in place for one midfielder, Wenger is readying a bid for Barcelona youngster Sergi Samper to continue filling the gaping holes at the Arsenal midfield.

According to the Metro, Arsenal are closing in on a deal for the 20-year-old midfielder in a deal worth about £4.4 million.

Samper has yet to debut for Barcelona in La Liga but has made a handful of appearances for the club in the Copa Del Ray and Europe. He has played the majority of his football career with Barcelona B.

Arsenal have been ravaged by injuries over the past few months, losing star midfielder Jack Wilshere for several additional months as well as key veterans such as Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin. However, Arsenal have a history of finding star talent from Barcelona’s youth system. In 2003 they poached Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, and just a few years ago they got star defender Hector Bellerin.
