Man United had deal in place to sign Robert Lewandowski but opted for RVP instead

A story in The Independent is claiming today that Manchester united once had the chance to sign Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski but instead chose to move for Robin van Persie instead.

Back in 2012 when the Polish international was with Bundesliga big guns Borussia Dortmund, the Red Devils were offered the opportunity to bring the striker to Old Trafford, but decided to weaken their opponents Arsenal rather than take the gamble on him.

The report states: “United had agreed a deal in principle with Borussia Dortmund to sign Lewandowski back in 2012, but decided to pursue Robin van Persie instead, leaving the Poland international to join Bayern on a free transfer at the end of the 2013/14 season.”

The Dutchman was crucial to United’s title victory during his first season at the club, but saw his form take a dramatic nosedive toward the end of his stay.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, no?
