Roy Hodgson resigns: England manager steps down following shock loss to Iceland

Roy Hodgson has stepped down as manager of England mere minutes after the final whistle was blown in the Three Lions’ shocking 2-1 loss to Iceland.

According to multiple outlets including Metro, Times Sport and Telegraph, Hodgson has resigned as manager of the team.

England scored the opening goal off a Wayne Rooney penalty kick, but Iceland struck back almost immediately with an equalizer. A few minutes later they scored a go-ahead goal and maintained their lead for the remainder of the game despite Hodgson fielding as many as five strikers late in the match.

Per Squawka News, assistant managers Gary Neville and Ray Lewington have also stepped down from their respective roles with the team.

In May 2012, Hodgson was appointed manager of England to replace Fabio Capello. His overall record for the Three Lions was 33W-15D-8L – a 58.93% win rate in his four years at the helm.

During his tenure, Hodgson oversaw a loss to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2012 knockout round, followed by elimination in the 2014 FIFA World Cup at the group stage, along with the aforementioned loss to Iceland at Euro 2016.

In a managerial career spanning 40 years, Hodgson has managed almost 20 different teams – clubs and countries combined – including Inter Milan, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool.
