Portugal made history winning the European Championship for the first time in the countries history after beating France 1-0 in the Euro 2016 final at the Stade de France.

The Portuguese national team did now however, suffer a major set back early in the game when Dimitri Payet’s challenge on Cristiano Ronaldo forced the team captain off.

Ronaldo was taken off on stretchers after just 25 minutes and was replaced by Besiktas winger Ricardo Quaresma.

The 31-year-old did initially try to play on but his injury was too severe to continue and he left the pitch in tears.

Ronaldo’s mother Dolares Aveiro was not best pleased with the challenge and expressed just how annoyed she was with the incident after the incident.

“I can’t see my son like that,” Aveiro told Marca.

“This sport is about kicking a football, not about kicking the opponent.”

Payet was unable to add to his goal or assist tally and was eventually taken off on for Kingsley Coman early in the second half.

Despite having to come off injured Ronaldo did end up lifting his first international major tournament trophy after the game.
