Manchester United keen on Benfica full back

The Sun have reported that Manchester United are interested in signing Benfica full back Nelson Semedo as Jose Mourinho looks to improve the quality of his full backs.

It’s been a problem position for years at United, with Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia regularly having to fill in in defence, as well as a host of youngsters over the past few years.

Signings Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw, amongst others, have failed to solve the issues for a variety of reasons, and Jose Mourinho wants a new face in the door in January, with Portugese Semedo his top priority according to the paper.

The Sun’s information comes from Portuguese paper Diario Noticias, which points out the transfer might not be as straightforward as Jose might like. The defender has four years left on his contract with a £50m release clause, so the Portuguese side could hold out for a huge price if they wished, or not sell at all.

It will be interesting to see just how much the Red Devils are willing to spend in January to solve this long term issue.
