If there’s one thing that has characterised Todd Boehly’s tenure at Chelsea, it is the seemingly haphazard way that the American has approached the transfer windows.
Though there’s clearly some business nous behind it, the way in which the Blues have hoovered up talent for extortionate fees is akin to a kid in a sweetshop buying up everything possible.
The flip side of course is then you spit out anything you don’t like, and the fire sale we saw at Stamford Bridge last summer was bordering on the incredible.
You could’ve made an entire first team from the amount of players that were allowed to move on or eased out of the club.
Mauricio Pochettino was left to pick up the pieces and, somewhat predictably, has struggled throughout the 2023/24 campaign.
It isn’t clear at this stage if Boehly will keep the Argentinian on into next season given Chelsea’s lowly league position and standard of performances, but whomever is in charge surely won’t want to hear that yet another fire sale of players is planned.
“Chelsea are going to have to offload players early in the window – before the books are balanced on 30 June,” former Everton chief, Keith Wyness, said on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.
“Their business is going to be the big one to set the ripple effect going – if they don’t achieve their targets.
“They can then go out and spend again later in the window. That just shows to me that these rules and limits are being applied in the wrong way.
“There has to be an element of common sense that comes into this.
“Chelsea will target certain players, like Gallagher, to get maximum value as he came through the academy at the club.”
Wyness seems to know what he’s talking about too, given that he is now a football consultant advising elite clubs.
Surely Boehly has learned his lesson by now…
