West Ham are readying an ambitious approach to sign two Man United players who have previously played for the east London side.

CaughtOffside understands that the Upton Park outfit will look to persuade centre-back Rio Ferdinand to sign a short term deal when his Old Trafford contract expires this summer.

The 35 year old defender may well be tempted by a return to West Ham if no new offer is forthcoming from his current employers. Ferdinand made 158 appearances for the Hammers prior to his £18m move to Leeds United back in November 2000.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce also wants to welcome back Michael Carrick, with the England midfielder said to be a player David Moyes may be ready to offload among a host of those who could be part of a major clear-out by the Scot.

Carrick has had an up and down season but has been a regular in the Man United starting eleven, making 31 appearances in all competitions.

The 32 year old has just over a year to run on his current contract and the fact that no new deal has been offered may be a sign that the midfielder is no longer a crucial part of David Moyes’s long and medium term plans.

Carrick spent five seasons in the West Ham first team set-up, making 159 appearances, before he left the club for Tottenham back in August 2004.

Allardyce hopes to be handed a significant transfer war-chest in the summer and will look to offer Carrick and Ferdinand lucrative deals to help persuade them to return to the club that helped launched their respective careers.
