Manchester United eyeing up big money move for Italian midfielder.
Reports in Italy say that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson wants to sign Juventus’ Claudio Marchisio, who could cost around £30million.
Calciomercato claim that the United boss sees the Italian as an ideal long-term replacement for Paul Scholes, who may retire at the end of this season.
Marchisio has been at Juventus for his whole career, apart from a loan spell with Empoli in 2007/08, and has a good track record of getting goals and assists from midfield in a manner that Scholes did for United at his peak.
The former England midfielder actually retired two years ago, before changing his mind and returning to the game in the middle of last season. However, the 38-year-old may feel he has enjoyed his last season as a professional footballer, and will want to go out on a high after the Red Devils reclaimed the Premier League title from rivals Manchester City.
United are expected to make several changes to their midfield and attack this summer, with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Nani all rumoured to be leaving, and they have already been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan as another possible candidate for their midfield issues.
