Wigan are preparing for life without Roberto Martinez and are drawing up a shortlist of potential successors for the Spaniard according to The Mirror.

The Latics enjoyed a rollercoaster season, experiencing the joy of lifting the FA Cup trophy whilst subsequently suffering the agony of relegation.

The prospect of Championship football appears to have persuaded Martinez he has taken the club as far as he can and he looks likely to be appointed as David Moyes successor at Everton.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is keen not to waste any time in appointing his successor and is already planning talks with potential candidates.

Top of that list is thought to be Owen Coyle, who performed impressively in the Premier League with the likes of Burnley and Bolton.

Wigan will have to move fast though as it is thought that Coyle has already held talks regarding the vacant managerial position at Wolves.

Should Wigan fail in their attempts to bring in Coyle, they will turn to England under-21 manager Stuart Pearce.

Whelan is known to be a big admirer of Pearce, who he championed for the England job back when Pearce was manager of Manchester City.

Pearce is currently on international duty but is thought to have more than a passing interest in returning to club management.
